Youth Education Programs Provided by Family Transition Place

Since 1984, Family Transition Place (FTP) has been primarily known for providing services to women and children who have experienced abuse in the Caledon and Dufferin communities. We aspire to a community free of abuse where all individuals are treated with compassion, equity and respect, and live their lives in healthy relationships. Our mission is to support the holistic well-being of those affected by gender-based violence and promote healthy relationships and community, through education.

Research shows that having healthy relationships builds self-esteem, improves mental and emotional health and helps people live a fuller life. (thenationshealth.aphapublications.org/content/41/2/20.full)

Since 2001, FTP has reached thousands of students through our Youth Education Programs. These interactive and engaging programs strive to teach youth the importance of healthy relationships that are free of violence. We started by delivering one-offs to schools in Dufferin which developed into 8-week programs. Our primary focus is our 8-week programs being delivered to students in grades 5-8, with each grade having a different focus.

Our 8-week programs consist of Stereotype Busters (Grade 5), Inspire (Grade 6), Power (Grade 7) and I AM (Grade 8). Each program uses a pre and post, valid and reliable survey that determines the effectiveness of each program. For more information about the programs offered by the Youth Education Program, please see our Youth Education Flyer.

Since this is our first year as experts on Digital Human Library, we are facilitating our grade 9 program. In this lesson, students will explore the root cause and warning signs of an abusive relationship, as well as learn to identify ways to deal with abusive relationships. Students will also have the opportunity to examine the link between sexual assault and substance use.

Let’s build healthy relationships, one class at a time.
